As you are performing takeoff, you may find that there are groups of items that you are taking off frequently. You can group them as an assembly and assign them to an Estimate assembly key so they will always be available for that Estimate at the touch of a key. Assemblies created in takeoff can only be assigned to keys on the Estimate Assembly (Menu #10).
The steps below illustrate creating a simple assembly with both rectangular and non-rectangular items. As Fro example, assume a total of four items have been taken off. We'll create an assembly containing these items.
1. First, the Estimate Assemblies takeoff menu must be active. Select File > Options > Takeoff Options. Select Menu Estimate Assemblies (10). Select OK to return to Takeoff.
2. Notice that the menu keys have changed. Estimate Assemblies is shown in the Status Bar.
3. Select all of the items you want included in the assembly. In this example, we'll use the Select All function to select all of the items. However, you can use standard Windows selection techniques such as the combination of the Shift or Ctrl keys with the mouse to select a group of items.
4. Use the primary mouse button to click and drag the selected items to an assembly key. In this case, the cursor changes to an arrow attached to a page containing a plus sign as the items are being dragged to key A.
5. When you release the primary mouse button, the program prompts you to enter a description for the new assembly key. Enter an appropriate description.
6. Upon selecting OK after entering a key description, the Estimate Assemblies menu shows the new key.
7. Now that the assembly is set-up on an Estimate Assemblies menu key, it can be taken off. Select the new menu key by double-clicking on it with the primary mouse button.
8. Enter a quantity when prompted (a quantity of 2 was entered for this example). The assembly is taken off. When items are taken off as an assembly, the items' icons will be connected and the quantities will have been doubled (because a quantity of 2 was entered).
